I had a similar problem with my Ambassador. Turned out to be nothing more
than a bad ground connection where the negative lead bolted to the frame.
FWIW, I use a standard GM side-terminal battery. Just barely fits, but is
cheap, readily available and cranks that Marrelli starter like nobody's
business.

Hello,
I'm new to this site and already I have found it useful. I have a 70
Ambassador that I rebuilt last year. I had a popping in the right
cylinder at idle all last summer. I have had that carb out of the bike
a half dozen times. I'll try the timing.
The other problem I have is low starter rpms. It's like I always have
a dead battery. I had the starter rebuilt and the generator is putting
out the proper voltage. My battery was new last year (the guy said it's
the one they use in the Harleys) but maybe it's to small. Can anyone
recommend a good one? Or did I get a bad starter rebuild?
