David, the amals might work good for a while but then the slides begin to wear and
your idle settings will become irregular. Having had many brit bikes (and cars),
I've found the carbs to usually cause the most trouble. With the cars, the fix is
a weber. With the bikes, I'd use a delorto because of the lack of trouble, ease of
tuning, and those wonderful pumpers.
As to the police versus standard model, the police dash looks great especially when
polished out but you give up a tach. The floorboards and forward controls are a
great improvement and the police sidestand is a must. In my opinion, the stock
model sidestand is worthless. After 25 or so different bikes which, with the
exception of a couple of jap bikes, all been italian or british, my favorite is an
eldorado. Its classic, fun, draws a crowd, reliable, and is comfortable on long
trips, user serviceable when necessary, etc. I built my first one from boxes and
traded it for a lemans, then had to sell the lemans for tuition. Oh well, won't let
this one get away!

a police like this

notice the key is in the dash on the civilian, it is under the seat on the left
side on a police model.

the Police should have a side stand that attaches to the left crash bar instead
of the frame as on a civilian.

the seat on a police is a solo seat , the police if as origional, had a
siren, lights, a radio carrier, all those cool things. It will also have a
bracket welded to the frame on the left rear for the siren mount, this
interferes with a tool box, so police models only have a tool box on the right
side, where civillian models have them on both sides.

carbs as origional should be Delorto's and work great, I have never heard good
things about Amals on a Guzzi, but have never experienced them myself, Anyone
have info on them to add?

I'm thinking of buying my first guzzi, how can you tell a police version
from a civillian, is one more desirable then the other? my triumphs run
great with amal carbs, do the amals work good on the ambo? are the
origonal or reprints of the shop manuals hard to come by? any other tips
on purchasing a 1970 ambassador would be greatly appreciated.
