If I were coming from the South, I'd spend most of my time
on the "smaller" roads to the west of ridge - various
combinations of Hwy 42 & 615, 32 and many others run up
from near Bristol most of the way up the western side of
the blue ridge. These are well maintained but small
twisty two lane roads with far less police presence than
other major Hwy's, for those of you so inclined to care
:). Sometimes these roads aren't shown on major paper
maps, but if you use local maps, software or GPS, they are
easy to find.
The BRP is beautiful, and Deals Gap and Tail of the Dragon
are motorcycling "requirements". However, the BRP has a
35mph speed limit and high traffic volumes throughout the
summer - worse in fall. Speeding on the BRP is nothing
but an "entertainment tax" - there's no points on your
license, if I recall correctly. I generally have more fun
on the smaller roads, with the added advantage of being
able to stop at a variety of "small town America" diners,
gas stations, and drinking establishments along the way.

Fantastic twisties and great scenery (if you get a chance to see it). VA250 will take you into Staunton and easy access to the BRP from there. What day are you planning on leaving the rally? I usually leave Sunday morning and go down (at least some of) 250 on my way to Arbovale, WV and stay the night at Boyer's Station Motel & Restaurant for the night. The Mountaineer BMW Rally (think that's correct) is usally held there over Memorial Day weekend and it's kinda' cool to hang out with them a bit. The big reason I stay there is it's the closest place to Cass Scenic RR - if you are even remotely interested in steams trains you gotta' check it out. Some of the best views on the excursion in all of WV in my opinion. Maybe they'll even be running the Heisler which is sort of a gigantic steam powered Guzzi! Monsterous 90* v-twin, with shaft-drive. Green Bank NRAO is nearby also with their 300+ ft. high radio telescope. After that I try to take a different route home every year. Haven't been over 250 to Monterey then up 220 for a while, maybe this year. If you or anyone else would like to ride along with me that would be great. Maybe a mini Loop Group Ride? If you'd like more info. on the area, I can send/post a few links that will help. Need sleep now, though. Cheers, Greg Bender wrote:
