Yup, I bent the tang down that was sticking up. I think I am going to have to either fabricate the tool to remove it or buy one. My jerry rig methods just aren't working. It is a right-handed thread, isn't it?

Should be standard threaded, or right-handed. IIRC, there is a washer with a lock tang that holds the nut in place. Did you bend the tang away from the nut? Maybe it lays in the shaft groove?
