Yes, it is right handed. I fabricated a 30mm socket to remove it, but it wasn't particularly effective. If the nut is actually torqued down it probably won't get the job done (the PO on mine had it barely finger tight, I'm amazed it ever held). That's why I replaced it with the 27MM stakenut.

Should be standard threaded, or right-handed.
IIRC, there is a washer with a lock tang that holds the nut in place. Did you bend the tang away from the nut? Maybe it lays in the shaft groove?
