Had the same thing happen on a Falcone riding in the mountains of Corsica. Bike died, zero compression (only one cylinder remember). While waiting for a tow, the bike cooled, compression returned, fired up and ran like a champ the entire trip and across Italy back to Vicenza. This bike had just had head work. Clearly, the valve guide was a tad tight, hung the valve stem when it heated. Must have been just enogh wear in the incident to "create" normal clearances. Glad we didn't hole the piston or bend the valve stem. YMMV!

Before you do serious damage, you might consider pulling that head again and re-examining the stem to guide clearance. A little time, a few gaskets. Much better than a hole in a piston. It may never happen again, but this is good insurance. Also get the carbs right, as a lean mixture generates LOTS of extra heat.

Hi Guys:

In 2003 I picked up a 67 V700. The chrome was shot in the cylinders so
I had cast iron sleeves installed. A good set of stock pistons was
fitted with Greeves rings from MG Cycle. The valve guides were knurled
and the valves and seats reground. All the work was done by a good
friend at the shop he works for - he's a pro at this stuff.

For my first ride I headed up over a small mountain, maybe 1000 ft. My
pace was moderate as the bike was running somewhat poorly due to
misadjusted carbs. As I reached the top of the "hill" the left side of
the engine let out the most awful racket. I yanked the clutch and the
bike died. I pulled the valve covers thinking something had to be
floating around in there and everything was normal. Figuring I had
little to loose I turned the key and the bike fired right up and I rode
it home.

Since then it's happen three other times - always under a load. The
last time I was passing a semi on the interstate - not good!! The bike
runs great otherwise with good compression, no junk in the oil, etc.

The noise is from the left cyliner and sounds like a valve could be
hanging open based on the high frequency rapping sound.

Anyone ever experience anything like this?
