Hi Ian,
I've not encountered this problem, but you may want to try alternating
heat and cold/tightening and loosening/plenty of your favorite
penetrating oil, etc. Also, you may want to try putting a vice-grip on
the threaded part of the tank to hold it in place while trying to loosen
the petcock. You may have to grind on the vice grips a bit to get the to
fit properly (maybe a needle-nosed pair would work without
modification).
If it comes down to needing a repair, perhaps someone else on this list
has gone there before. If memory serves, I think some folks have had
good luck with radiator repair shops.
Good luck!

Hey All, I was getting ready to strip my tank yesterday for painting and as I was trying to remove one of the petcocks the threaded recess started to bend in on the tank body. The petcock never came off and I don't think I can try anymore without the metal breaking totally. I will need to repair this. Anybody have to deal with this problem in the past? Suggestions? I am thinking I will need to get a thin piece of metal to have welded. on the bottom and drill new taps. Thanks in advance...Ian |
