I used an air conditioning coil cleaner the first time when restoring mine.
Went to an air conditioning supply house and got the spray can of condenser
coil cleaner for alumium coils. Worked great, melted the grease & grime off
(no rubbing or scrubbing) and rinsed well with cold water. Just don't get
the acid cleaner, make sure it's for alumium.

Mine did the same thing. I sprayed it on and scrubbed it in with a stiff
brush and then washed it off with some hot soapy water. I did this at
least two maybe three times and it cleaned off all the old grease and
road crud. Just make sure you rinse it with hot soapy water really good
to get all the cleaner off.

Okay...about this oven cleaner. I sprayed the tranny cover and the whole

thing turned charcoal grey in about 10 seconds!! Then about an hour with
detergent
to get off the grey!! Still not pretty...another application? Is this
"burning" the alloy, or is it removing deep down grease from 30 years.
It wasn't
visibly that greasy when I started. Thx,
