Lenny,

I used the "Dave Otis" method of engine in first. Put cardboard down on the garage floor- lined the engine up next to the frame and with the help of Dave Washburn swung it in to be bolted in (raising the frame to meet the engine bolts). No wheels = no rolling or need for centerstand = less ackward.

http://groups.msn.com/GroupHomeGarage/engineinstallation.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=54

We then carried it over to my makeshift "stand" - I grabbed 4 concrete blocks from my backyard and stacked them up with some cardboard on top - could use carpet like you suggested but the only scratches came during engine installation - (NYC Loopers - stong - yes, graceful - no) . The milkcrate I stuck in the back and table under the back loop kept it pretty well stablized

This also made installing the front end (with a little leaning on the back for ground clearance) and the rear pretty easy.

Good luck,
Chris M.
'71 Ambo
