Ian,
By using the positive side of the coil to run the tach, just makes it a
'switched' circuit .. and by putting it on the coil sorta relates the
two wires on the coil going to the tach.

Bruce,

Thanks...will do that.

No second wire on the positive side to the tach. I am thinking that there is
another source feeding the tach since it worked last time the biking was
running. Things are starting to make sense now.

Ian,
According to the wiring diagram there should be two wires
on each side
of the coil. On the '+' side is a 12v feed and a wire going to the
tach. On the '-' side is a wire going to the distributor and one going
to the tach. The tach needs 12v supply to run the tach ('+' wire) and a
signal wire ('-' wire) to indicate the rpm.

Here is your chance to play distributor on TV. Put the points in a
closed position by bumping the engine over. Pull the center wire from
the dist.. cap and position about 1/4" from the frame. Turn the key to
the on position, then use a non-metallic tool to open/close the points.
When the points open, there should be a tiny spark between the points
and a much bigger one from the center wire to the frame. If not, then
check to make sure that the coil is getting 12v, that the point wire to
the '-' side is in good condition, and your coil wire is ok.

You should be able to locate a Blue Bosch coil and any foreign car
parts place - air cooled VWs love them.

'72 Eldo

Well....the White Eldo is back together and the clutch ready to
be tested.
Only problem is that I can't get the old girl to fire. I'll
have to break
down and buy a voltmeter (my other one is 1500 miles away)
since it is the
only way I will be able to trace the problem. I am thinking it
is either the
coil itself or I am not getting voltage to the coil. At any
rate....at this
point I am not getting a spark from the coil to the distributor.

My question: Voltage from the battery goes to the + side of the coil and
the - side of the coil goes to the dist....right? Also...there
was another
wire to the coil. I am thinking that this wire is for the tach. Does it
matter if this wire is connected to the + or -? The coil that was on the
bike had the wire running to the -ve side of the coil.

Interesting to note.....this White Eldo had an aftermarket coil
without the
internal resistor. Would this make a difference? I'll try and
find a Bosch
 Blue.
