Ian,
According to the wiring diagram there should be two wires on each side
of the coil. On the '+' side is a 12v feed and a wire going to the
tach. On the '-' side is a wire going to the distributor and one going
to the tach. The tach needs 12v supply to run the tach ('+' wire) and a
signal wire ('-' wire) to indicate the rpm.
Here is your chance to play distributor on TV. Put the points in a
closed position by bumping the engine over. Pull the center wire from
the dist.. cap and position about 1/4" from the frame. Turn the key to
the on position, then use a non-metallic tool to open/close the points.
When the points open, there should be a tiny spark between the points
and a much bigger one from the center wire to the frame. If not, then
check to make sure that the coil is getting 12v, that the point wire to
the '-' side is in good condition, and your coil wire is ok.
You should be able to locate a Blue Bosch coil and any foreign car
parts place - air cooled VWs love them.
