Test to see if you get a spark manually. Feed the LT of the coil and
ground the other side out- you should get a spark out of the HT. This
is not a real good way to run an engine- I have lousy timing, and I cant
dance either. Sorry.
If you have to replace the coil, use one from a mid-60's vw bug.
Measure the resistance first though- that's important.
Other issues I've had in the past- points grounded where the little bolt
goes through the plastic sleeve on the side of the distributor. If this
happens, then no matter how well you set your points, they wont actuate.
Pat, that was a real nice writeup of how points/coils work. Check for
grounding with an ohmmeter.
After that- replace spark plugs, and check that your plug wires are ok.
Condensors are pretty bulletproof. You can put a new on in just for
completeness. I think you would get a spark, but not a very good one.
Also, if you have another loop handy (cant have too many) then you could
swap out one part at a time to find the offending piece. Time consuming
and laborious, but it works.
Good luck,
Jason
