1. I have power to the coil from the ignition switch. 2. Coil reads 1.8-2.1 ohms. 3. New points adjusted and gapped correctly. 4. All plug and coil wires test good with the meter. 5. New spark plugs gapped correctly. 6. Still no spark...I've pulled the HT wire from the distributor and held it near to ground and cranked the engine and I see no spark at all. |
The ignition system on a loop is about as simple as it gets so there's
something we're missing. Here's the process I would go through. My gut
feeling is it'll be in step 1.
1. Make sure the points aren't grounded out. Disconnect all wires from the
outside of the distributor (Condenser and small wire to the coil) and make
sure then you turn over the engine, the points ground and open as the engine
turns over. If you've got a VOM make sure it registers continuity and no
continuity as you turn over the engine. If it's always grounded there's a
problem and if they are always open, it's a problem.
2. Check for 12 volts to the coil (You've done this).
3. Disconnect wire small wire from coil to distributor and see if you've
got voltage at the side of the coil going to the distributor.
4. Manually ground the wire going from the coil to ground and see if you
get any spark out of the coil as you ground it.
As others have said, coils and condensers rarely go bad but condensers can
weaken. The only time I've had a coil go bad it would do it when it warmed
up and not when I started the engine.
