Yeah that's it. When its inserted it will drop down to the lip in the bore
in the flange. I didn't measure it but I would have to guess that from the
top of the pin to the inside of the case or the outside of the flange there
is a bit less the 1/8th of an inch. So that would give it romm to move up
and down in the bore without something hold ing it.

By "pin" do you mean the hollow steel tube that slides in the drilling
in the flange and bearing? It has a wider part at the top and that's
what keeps it from dropping closer to the crank. They usually fall
right out, and are held in place when the flange is inserted in the
crank case.
You can buy undersized bearings, but they come with the flange and are
$$. If you are lucky the crank may just need a polish.

Well, I knew my luck was running out with this engine I've been working on. The top end was beautiful but I pulled the crank a few weeks ago. The flange and bearing stayed on the crank when it came out. I got around to pulling the flange off last night. That bearing is trash. What I thought to be oil canals at first, I now have to believe is where the sheered piece of the locating pin (oil tube) made a home. ouch. This is between the OD of the bearing and the ID of the flange. Yup, the bearing is still stuck on the crank. I'm hoping that the crank is such hard steel that when the bearing spun most of the damage stayed with the bearing OD and flange ID. I'll find out when I get the bearing off the crank. I did end up finding the piece of the pin that did the majority of the damage stuck in an oil hole. Hah, Jeeze, all the oil hole where just packed with crap. It seems as though the pin worked its way out, the bearing spun a bit, then the pin tried to seat itself again and sheered. Or something like that. Question Time: 1) What is used to hold the pin in place? Locktite, Interference fit?(hope not 'cause it ain't no interference fit anymore) 2) Just how pricy is the rr main. I know it can't be cheep. That thing is huge! 3) Are the oversized bearings, oversized in the Id and OD. Meaning if I need to clean up the flange and crank, can I find a bearing to fit? 4) Good idea to use perminate locktite between the flange and OD of the bearing? 5) How much for a pin? |
