Joe, you didn't say whether the discharge was while the engine was
running or off. If you are getting a discharge while the engine is shut
down and the ignition is off a sticky contact in the regulator is the
culprit. If the generator is not charging and the field is getting
excitation voltage ,yes the generator could be discharging the battery
when running but you have other current draws as well.
