The idle setting is where you pull the plugs. Turn the
screw with the spring on it. Setting mixture is the more
recessed screw and is done before you set idle. Start
with 1-1/2 turns or so and adjust from there. I'm 99%
sure I'm not stating this backwards. It's always worked
well for me this way.
BTW, to set the slides opening the same, look in one carb
and put your finger in the other one on the bottom of the
slide. You will see/feel them opening together or not.
Adjust thusly.

 Chris,

Did you state the backwards? I thought you pull the
wires on each side
when setting the mixture, and turned the idle screw out 1
1/4 or 1 1/2
turns per the book. I set my carb mixtures once by
pulling one side and
listening for 4-5 pulses, and adjusted mixture until I
got that, then
went to the other side and did the same. As for idle, I
adjusted the
idle on each side incrementally until I got it where it
sounded good.
Perhaps I did it backwards? Will have to check my manual
again.

Gotta be warm to do it. I set the mixture by the book
(the 1-1/2 turns out thing) and then turn each scew in
1/8
turn increments whichever direction makes the idle
speeds
up. Only do one carb at a time. Turn and wait about 30
seconds before turning more. Keep turning until it
slows
down again. Where you were before it slowed down is
where
you want to be.
Set idle by pulling one plug wire while idling. You
want
each side to be able to idle about 5 times on its own.
Pull, let it die, reconnect, restart, and repeat until
you
get them both about the same.
Hope this helps!

Should this be done when the bike is warm or cold? As
far as synching
the carbs, I do not have the screws in the manifold to
tap into to do
this, should I even bother drilling the holes in them
to
 use my carb
stix? What steps should be followed, I gather 1st turn
the idle screws
all the way in (clockwise), then back them off 1 1/4
turns, then set the
mixture on each side (my right side seems to be dead on
per the spark
plug condition, left side appears too rich (blackish)).
After mixture
is set, go back and adjust idle speed on each side
making
 sure to do
them evenly?
