The idle setting is where you pull the plugs. Turn the
screw with the spring on it. Setting mixture is the more
recessed screw and is done before you set idle. Start
with 1-1/2 turns or so and adjust from there. I'm 99%
sure I'm not stating this backwards. It's always worked
well for me this way.
BTW, to set the slides opening the same, look in one carb
and put your finger in the other one on the bottom of the
slide. You will see/feel them opening together or not.
Adjust thusly.

I set my carb mixtures once by pulling one side and listening for 4-5 pulses, and adjusted mixture until I got that, then went to the other side and did the same. As for idle, I adjusted the idle on each side incrementally until I got it where it sounded good. Perhaps I did it backwards? Will have to check my manual again.
