My Eldo, Maude, has a leak that I never can seem to entirely stop.

I hated the spotting of oil everywhere, so I rigged up a "maxipad" for
the old girl out of one of those 3M oil-absorbent pads (it's the same as
thinsulate). I rolled some up into a padd and duct-taped it over the
little drain hole under the bell housing. No more spotting or getting
oil on the sump during long rides.

Keith,

Along the lines of what Fred said....identify whether the fluid is
engine or
tranny oil. That will tell you what side the oil is coming from.

Depending on how much is leaking out you could probably run the bike and
only suffer a bit of embarrasment when you leave little drips behind at
your
friend's place.

Frankly I would run the bike.....making sure that the weep hole remains
free
to allow the oil to drain out. I would check the oil regularly and
watch for
changes in the amount that leaks out.

The best thing would be to fix the problem...but maybe it is better for
you
to ride the bike right now.

By the way.....I have heard that sometimes if you ride the bike....get
it
good and hot the rear seal will seal better. Just a rumor but doesn't
hurt....as long as you don't run the bike out of oil :-)

The main seal
 was replaced about a year ago/100 miles ago by the 1st mechanic, so I
can't imagine it being bad unless it was installed wrong. As for the
trans, it was all apart and nearly rebuilt, again, perhaps something
went wrong. My question is, how serious is this leak/should I be
worried? Some consolation came when I looked at Cam's Eldo and saw he
had the same leak, his casing is different, but the leak was from the
same "vent" type opening. So how many others have oil leaks
like this?
 
I'm not ready to give my bike to a 3rd mechanic in less than 2 years,
I've only had this bike at home maybe a month during this ownership!
The never ending saga continues....... Can anybody give me some
advice/consolation/a case of beer to drown my miseries of ownership?
Are you sure it's not tranny oil? The seal around the input hub or the
pushrod seal could be the culprit. There are a couple of things in the
clutch cavity that could leak motor oil besides the rear main also:
bolts on the lower part of the main seal flange, one of the breather
lines, the cam bearing plug, etc.

either way, to fix it you'll be cracking it open.
