hi! i just did a 120 mile ramble thru the snow [30's- brrrrr!] and
discovered that i, too, have the very same oil leak! it's either a] the
pressed in cam-plug [forgot to jb-weld it] b] the rear main seal [forgot to
space it in a little extra] c] the 2 bolts that roberto was talkin' about
[used teflon tape instead of goop- oops] d] the input shaft seal [rebuilt
trans, along time ago!] e] the conical pushrod seals that like to wad up and
fall out when ya slide the pushrod in. sigh. i'm gonna ride the sucker 'till
the clutch starts slippin'. screw it- suppose to be gettin' nice out real
soon!

I've had all I's cans stands, and I can't stands no more!

Spent the day with my friend/neighbor Cam Conklin polising up the Ambo
and his 74 police Eldo. I put on a bunch of new parts and found I need
a few more. I did a closer examination of my oil leak, and what I
dreaded most seems to have taken place. After spraying off everything
underneath with some Gumount last eve, I put a piece of tape over that
little hole in the casing where the engine and trans cases meet, just in
front of the oil pan. The oil is leaking from just above the oil pan
where the engine and trans case meet, and when I pulled the tape off of
the little hole, some oil came out of it also. Based on what I've heard
and read during the past 1.75 years, this is NOT GOOD! The main seal
was replaced about a year ago/100 miles ago by the 1st mechanic, so I
can't imagine it being bad unless it was installed wrong. As for the
trans, it was all apart and nearly rebuilt, again, perhaps something
went wrong. My question is, how serious is this leak/should I be
worried? Some consolation came when I looked at Cam's Eldo and saw he
had the same leak, his casing is different, but the leak was from the
same "vent" type opening. So how many others have oil leaks like this?
I'm not ready to give my bike to a 3rd mechanic in less than 2 years,
I've only had this bike at home maybe a month during this ownership!
The never ending saga continues....... Can anybody give me some
advice/consolation/a case of beer to drown my miseries of ownership?

Hey Ian,

Thanx for the advice. I bought a tube of permatex the other day and
will try it out this weekend. I looked under the bike again last eve
and it looks like the oil drain plug is weeping also. Can I use the
permatex on it also? Might as well try it out and stop all of the
leaks. I'm hoping this will cure the leaks, but I still have my eye

it's either weeping also or oil from the tranny drain plug is finding
it's way down to that area and settling there. I hope the oil isn't
coming from that little hole in the casing which may mean the main

seal

is leaking, which it better not be since it was replaced 1.5 years ago
(less than 100 miles ago)! One day this bike will be finished........

Thanx also to Karl, Pat, and Vince also for their advice, will try the
permatex goop method 1st.

Several months ago I had posted a message that I thought I had a

leak

between the engine and tranny case, but it turned out to be the

tranny

drain plug leaking gear oil, which works its way down the case and

ended

up at the oil pan gasket, from which it dripped to the floor. My
mechanic friend installed a new plug and gasket, and for months at

his

shop while it sat there, there wasn't a hint of a leak. Well,

after

riding it home, it has reared its ugly head again. The drain plug

wet, and gear oil is also running down the case like it was before

and

dripping to the ground. Has anybody experienced this problem and

how did you fix it?
