Hi Ian,
You've gotten some good advice about packing one bike
forward and one facing the rear. In addition, I would
suggest the following:

- don't disassemble them, they become boat anchors
that are too difficult to move.
- take the fuel tank and sidecovers/toolboxes off and
pack them in boxes carefully, these are what would
really hurt if they got scratched-up
- build a framework using 2X4s and 2x6s that fits
tight inside the trailer to the left & right with
blocks or 2x4s running lengthwise that cradle the
wheels, this way the bikes cannot slide their tires to
the side. When the bikes are in place, nail blocks
into place so the wheels cannot go back or forth. You
can use the 2x6s that run at the front and back of the
bikes to place tie down points. I would tie each bike
down at four points.
- you could even deflate the tires a little bit to
make them even less likely to shift around, just
remember you need to roll them out at the other end.

Take the time to pack them and they weather the trip
just fine. Do you have to travel through Buffalo?
Drive carefully and have a good trip.
Regards,
Tom
