Kev:
As for cars in the US market, Guzzis in the loop era were sold by model year.
Model years usually began in August, September, or October, depending
on the manufacturer.
In the case of Guzzi during this era, bikes for the new model year
were typically (but not always) put into production following the
traditional August vacation. Thus, the September and later bikes
built in a given year were really for the following model year in the
US, so a Guzzi built in December 1970 would properly be a 1971 model,
in the same way a Chevy built in December 1970 would be a 1971 model.
All the foregoing applies to the model-year date stamped on the
bike's data plate only. (Data plates were first used on the big-tank
Ambassadors, I think, and the first of them did not have a line for
model year, I think.)
Titles and "model year" were another matter.
Leftover bikes in some states were titled for the year they were
first sold. Thus, you could have a bike built in December 1970, for
model year 1971 (which may or may not be stamped on the data plate),
but with a model-year date on the title of 1972 or 1973.
Compounding the problem was that Berliner had available blank data
plates so that a dealer could potentially replace the original plate
with one stamped for whatever the current model year was.
This is all gonna create a huge mess if the loops become really
valuable in the future, because it makes it really almost impossible
to verify that a rare specimen (such as a 1975 Eldo) really is what
its owner says it is. Only the factory knows for sure.

Yep, My Ambo is titled as a 71. I personally have owned two 1973 Eldo's titled as 1974 models. Of course, 1974 models had the front disc brake. Neither of my bikes had the juice brake. Both had the amal carbs. Del Orto was on strike in mid 1973 so they used amals on that production run. --- Robert Hawkes <haw-@frontiernet.net> wrote:
