I think that it is not a matter of being cheap as much as it is having a bike that allows you to ride 500 miles with no warning whatsoever. No need to "run it by the shop" before a trip. This leads to lack of planning ie: no toll money, as the sum total of most of our trips are planned this way: "Wanna go on a ride?" "Sure. Where you wanna go?" "See the shipyard in Norfolk?"
