Well, I got mine for a bit more....actually traded my Suzuki X-6 Hustler for
it. I responded to an ad in the Chicago paper, offering BSA 500 singles for
sale, for $500. Even as a kid I thought BSA thumpers were cool so I went to
see them. Turned out to be Buzz Walneck, of Cycle Trader fame. Spent the day
with him, and he finally agreed to swap my almost new X-6, which cost me
$500, for one of his M-20s.
I remember after getting it, I began researching it and so I wrote to
several British mags, asking for help. There was one company in England that
offered refurbished running gear, including motor, tranny, and rear hub for
$75.....but being the dumb kid I was, I never sent for one. I did ride the
pants off of it out there in Illinois, while going to Navy schools, then
brought it to California, where I was sent to shipboard duty.
Kept the bike for several years, then lost it during my first
marriage.....seems the first wife saw the bikes I had as dollar signs.

Yup,

Back around 1974 on the way to work a I saw a guy unloading a
truckload of M-20 BSAs at an old gas station. We stopped on the way home
from work and he was selling them for $85 each. Almost like he knew I
had 85 and change in my pocket! I brought one home and spent the next
week making parts to replace missing clutch parts. The bike was a real
hoot to ride kind of like the two wheeled version of my old Model A
Ford. I think the Ford was faster :-). Wound up trading the old gem for
a real nice 1971 Commando . The M-20 is still running the Commando is
long gone. The fellow I traded with never got rid of the M-20 and I
suppose he came out on top.

Thank you for sharing your opinion as well as reading mine.
I agree with the last line completely. They never were perfect, a lot
of
 
 fun and easy to work on. A recent issue of Classic Cycle Mag (I
Believe)had a very good article on the Enfield twins .
Out of 20 or so BSAs I've owned the only one from the 40s was an
M-20.
 
 Not exactly the epitome of quality! Out of all the Parallel twin Brits
Ive owned ,Norton ,Triumph ,BSA and Matchless the RE was the tops in
overall quality.My opinion is based on actually owning ,restoring and
touring on them as well as working on bikes owned by others.
I ride Guzzis now mostly because they are kinder to my old bones. If
I
 
 were to get another Brit twin the RE would still be at the top of my
list.

I, too, love old British iron, and have owned and worked on some,
only
 
 
 BSA, Ariel and Norton. I almost bought an Interceptor in 1970, and
I
 
 
 did like riding it, but careful examination showed it to be
typically
 
 
 British, not tremendously improved over the 1940 BSA I owned, and
the
 
 
 bike needed work that I could not do, being in the Navy at the time.

The only reason I don't have an Indian Enfield is because I can't
afford
 
 
 one at the moment, and have three Guzzi's.

British bikes survive mostly on nostalgia, not perfection.

Sure would be nice if they came out with a remake of the late
Interceptor twin. I was a great bike VEry SMooth running and the

referring to the Brit bikes quite a difference in quality.

I was backing up Jim as he was referring to "ROYAL" Enfields as

 to Enfields (India). The India Enfields ain't "Royal"! Never
owned
 
 an
 
 
 India Enfield but I was thinking about buying a one. If they
make

 valve noise than an iron rocker stand Guzzi they might even be
safer
