I would hope they could build bikes better now than 50 years ago!
The India Enfields are actually poorly made . The tolerances on
machined parts is broad requiring selective fitting IE cam journal to
bearing.Valves to guide etc.
The last of the Interceptors were well made indeed !The design was of
course dated but, they were the only Brit twin to be electronically
balanced at the factory. They were very smooth running and durable. The
26 pound nodular iron crank ran in very generously sized main bearings
and was very durable. The worst "flaw" -leaking oil between the cylinders
was easy to remedy . If you are lucky enough to get one I can send you
the fix. They used Cross rings to seal the head and blown head joints
were impossible.Compared to the other Brit twins it was a joy to own.
not as fast as a Triumph or Norton ,but a lot smoother and longer
running. They are not the same type of bike as a Guzzi but the Brit
Enfields were a ton better than the current Enfields in all ways ,Fit
Finish, Material. PERIOD.

The Indian Enfields are made directly from the 1955 Royal Enfields from
Britain. Since then they have made some improvements to them. The
British made Enfields of the 50's were of no better quality. The last of
the Enfields were typical of British manufactured bikes - poorly made
compared to Guzzi or BMW.

Sure would be nice if they came out with a remake of the late
Interceptor twin. I was a great bike VEry SMooth running and the sound
it made was fantastic. I hear if you buy a new Bullet, take it apart and
carefully reassemble they aren't half bad. (If you can make a Guzzi or a
Beemer haul you around reliably these can't be that much worse :-) ! )
I do see them calling them Royal Enfields now I think Jim was
referring to the Brit bikes quite a difference in quality.

 Hey Gary,

YEah, I want one or two myself. Of course only the design is British,
but they did finally get the right to use ROYAL Enfield, instead of just
Enfield. So now they are legally "Royal Enfields".

I was backing up Jim as he was referring to "ROYAL" Enfields as opposed
to Enfields (India). The India Enfields ain't "Royal"! Never owned an
India Enfield but I was thinking about buying a one. If they make more
valve noise than an iron rocker stand Guzzi they might even be safer !

Well, we are talking about the Indian Enfields here, so I couldn't say
which was louder...

I have owned 7 RE Interceptors and I would agree. The Guzzi beats them
(louder) hands down. Ride a Guzzi live forever !Here is one of the
Enfields-http://community.webshots.com/album/24267127XGTxWVBjCs

Hmmmm... My '68 Enfield 750 Interceptor's valve noise is not even
close to a Guzzi's.... No contest....

Well, looks like Royal Enfield beat us to the punch. According to their
newsletter they will have a T-shirt in the next catalog that has the
slogan "Loud Valves Save Lives" on it.
