Maybe this helps. The shifter shaft has a black plastic collar on the
opposite end from the splines. Cant tell if it acts as a bushing or as a
way to hold sideways position.
I dont have any position problem with it.

I put about 100 miles on it and then re adjusted for the slack. seems okay now. The floppy shifter is buggin me.
