Tim,
I did 2 sets over the winter, they were a pain. Your first attempt at
the chrome sleeves/collers can be w/a strap wrench. These have a very
fine thread that corrodes easily, If your lucky they'll break free. This
did not work for me. So I fabricated a tool out of an old exhaust pipe.
On one end I welded a T bar setup. On the othe I cut slots to fit the
sleeve inside. This worked w/the combination of the strapwrench and
anouther person. If I remember right, that setup got me though 3 of the
4 legs. I had to use tool drawer liner and alot of duct tape wrapped
around the sleeve to protect the chrome, even still I ended up w/a few
love marks.
One tip for installation on pulling the tubes up through the headlight
ears is shoving a 1"x1" piece of wood into the top of the tube, apply
enough ducttape to hold it to the tube but still wiggle the tube through
the triple tree. After that it's home free.
Of course, if you got an extra fork cap, this would be ideal welded to
the end of some rod.
Hope this helps, even a little

Hey Gents, I'll be working on the $200.00 Ambo 750, that I just purchased, over the weekend. I'll probably be doing a lot of damage assessment and making out the wish list. One thing that I want to do is disassemble the front forks and prep them for rebuilding. I have the forks off the bike. My questions are; "How do I get the fork tubes out of the fork covers?" Do I need special tools? If special tools are required, can they be fabricated easily? Also, any info on parts, seals, estimated prices and the place to shop for the parts. Thanks a bunch, Tim 73 Police GT & 70 Ambo |
