Have never tried mounting it the other way...will do that sometime.
I have also replaced the rubber gasket in my cap. It won't go down over the
neck far enough for the rubber to seal anything. Once I get that problem
fixed, it'll probably work OK.

I found one way worked better that the other. Early models had the long end of the lever pointing towards the seat but after people were losing their privates when they went over the handle bars they made the lever go towards the front. As for the sealing. I have restored the filler caps for both my Ambos. The old gasket material was dried out inside. The dam thing leaked gas on my fresh paint! I went to a local rubber supplier and the very nice owner (Italian :-)) gave me a sheet of gas resistant rubber. I cut a new gasket and presto...no leaks. I suspect that the reason your tank leaks is because of the old gasket.
