Hi Charlie,
The bike has 22k original miles, barely broken in. The bike did set up
for 27 years started every once in awhile I finally found out.
Any way I adjust the valves at TDC, I ensure this by checking the position
of the rotor and removing the plug and very gently slipping a small screw
driving in the hole ( just until I feel a little presure.) to make sure the
piston is on top. I adjust the valves with the bike cold, I have rechecked
the adjustmeents a couple of times as well. I guess I am paranoid as I just
got it registered to where I can go on a road trip and don't want to end up
pushing.
Thanks,
Rick

The gear whine is a characteristic of the four-speed transmission and is nothing to worry about. I like the sound of the old four-speed and the barely audible cam gears whirring merrily along. I also like a little valve noise - but not too much. :-) I set my valves on the "base" of the cam lobe - that is the point on the cam opposite maximum lift. Turn the engine until the valve you are adjusting is fully open, then turn the crankshaft one complete turn. The lifter will then be on the base of the cam lobe and the valve ready for adjusting. Works for me, hope it helps for you. How many miles on the bike? It could be worn rockers or lifters if it's high mileage. Later, Charlie 3 Ambos Richard Cunningham wrote:
