Ace Mallot was at M G Cycle's open house back in January and explained
that a lot of the noise we think is from the lifters is actually coming
from the rocker pushing up on the spring and slapping back against the
rocker holder casting. He said the spring is used because the final
width of each rocker is different depending on how the bushing was
pressed in. He typically removes the spring and replaces it with a
thrust washer set-up and then shims it to a few thousandths gap. Makes
sense to me. He said if you still want to use the springs you should
change them regularly and it will help make it quieter.
