I made the mistake of riding around with loose nuts (insert punch line here).
The vibration of the loose nuts caused the threads in the aluminum head to
distort and eventually become so damaged that I had to send the head up to Moto
International and have a the old ones machined out and a new insert welded in.
I think it was $100-$150 for the repair.
Safety wire is cheaper. Your local aircraft supply store should stock it.
Whatever you decide to do, make sure your nuts are good and tight (insert
redundant punch line here).
It's also best to loosen up any clamps or fasteners that hold your exhaust
system to the frame and tighten the head nut down first. This assures that
things will line up properly. Then you can go back and tighten the frame clamps
and mounting brackets.
Cheers,

Keith, I woudn't worry about the exhaust nuts too much. Like any old bike your Police Ambo requires more regular attention than a new bike. Here's what I do with my old bikes' exhaust nuts. When I hear the exhaust getting loud I know the nuts are getting loose. (This only happened once to me.) I get a small round steel rod, about 8" long and and place it against the teeth of the exhaust nut and tap it tighter with a hammer. This gets it tighter. Be careful not to hit the teeth so hard that you knock them off. Every so often tap them with your rod and hammer and make sure they are tight. Hope this helps. Bob Hawkes 1969 Ambo. |
