Doni, Did mine a couple of weeks ago. I ordered the fuel line with
the cross-over from MG Cycles. Comes with the lines nicely crimped to a new
crossover and more line than you need so you need to shorten as required.
Not cheap ($20) but does away with 4 hose clamps but you probably can't get
one before Wed. Drain the gas, pull the tank, carefully remove both petcocks
and clean the filters. While your at it you probably want to flush the tank
with a strong rust remover of your choice. I taped off the petcock holes and
poured about a quart of this remover in, shook it around and let it do it's
work. Tons of junk (and rust) came out. Again while your at it clean the
filter under the banjo bolts on the carbs (mine were both half clogged). The
internal petcock gaskets are very fragile. You will tear them very easily if
you try remove them. If you are brave and can get them out without messing
them up flipping them over sometimes works. Getting the handle and cover
back on is a bit of a pain. One word of warning (and don't ask why I know
this) Get a bottle brush (old toothbrush) and make sure the internal tank
threads are perfectly clean before trying to reinstall the petcocks. The
threads on the taps are very fine and soft. I used a wrap of teflon tape
(maybe not a good idea but have had not problems) on the threads before
reinstallation. It also might not be a bad idea to have a few of the very
thin gaskets that adjust where the petcocks 'bottom out' on the tanks to
adjust where the levers end up. BTW, I just got a new replacement V7 type
petcock (with the On and Reserve position) from Wessons in the UK. With
shipping it was $30 (which is what I see used ones sometimes go on Ebay for)
but took about 6 weeks to arrive. I just got an email from them indicating
that they have some more in stock.
Good luck and take your time,
Rich

Subject: cleaning petcocks/fuel line
Hi all,
One of my petcocks is leaking and the other must be clogged up
pretty good, because when I switch over to it, I'm getting no flow. I figure
if I can clean out that one this weekend, I will be OK until I can get a
hold of another one to replace the leaker. So, are there any
tips/suggestions for doing this? Also, I want to have some fuel lines on
hand incase I need to replace any of those old hoses when I take it all
apart. What should I use? I need something that is readily available, as I
will be doing this on Wednesday. Thanks.
Doni
