Another thing you might check is the generator bracket. One of the
hold-down bolts on my 74 sheared off and the other backed out. It made an
intermitting noise. I ended up replacing the bolts with studs and lock
nuts.

How about a cracked generator cover housing?
Mine did that on a cross country trip and made horrible noises at specific
rpms. Harmonic mulitplication. I thought it was curtains for the motor.
Eventually I figured it out, used pliers to yank out bits of it on the side
of the road and silent for the remainder of the trip.
