Picture this, my 71 LAPD Ambo has this speedo:

mounted in this housing:

Policehttp://www.loopframe.com/lapdinst.jpg

except my housing does not have the toggle "kill" switch. Moe at cycle
garden and I were trying to figure this out. Where the right toggle
switch is on the police speedo pic above, my housing has a push/pull
switch. Where the right push/pull switch is on the police speedo pic
above, my housing has a blue bulb that lights up when you pull up this
right side push/pull switch - haven't yet figured out what this right
side push/pull switch does other than light up the blue bulb, I have
heard that the police version used this switch to turn on a map light
that was attached to the windshield or handlebar - not sure. Only thing
Moe and I can think of is that since my bike was produced in 1970, it
probably has the earliest version of the police speedo housing and MG
used the V700 speedo instead of the speedo shown in the police speedo
pic above. Another note on my speedo housing, the top 4 bulbs are not
wired to the bike, they are left unplugged inside the housing. Reason
for this, I believe, is that my speedo has the built in idiot lights for
the high beam indicator, "dynamo", nuetral light, and oil pressure
light. On the latter police speedo, these lights were removed and the
top 4 bulbs on the housing were used instead, which is why I figured
mine are left disconnected. I guess my housing must have been a
prototype or stage 1 police housing prior to the final design shown in
the pic above.

I have a very long sidestand, can't recall if it's mounted to the frame
or to the crash bar, but do remember it's right under the bottom part of
the crash bar where it meets the frame - will have to check when I get
it back from the shop. Will also have to check for the siren bracket.
I know my bike is a stock setup as I am the 4th owner, but only the
second "titled" owner of the bike. I got in contact with the original
owner whom bought it new in late 1970 and he said everything on the bike
came with it when it was new (steel bags, Harley type windshield, solo
springer seat, etc..) so I don't think it's a fake police bike, probably
just an early version civilian police bike, a transitional step from the
civilian bike to the most common police Ambassador/Eldorado setups.
Even the 5100 original miles was true! Original owner didn't use it
very much!

and Hi to all you fellow Loopers!!I ride a Ambo 1970 , it's all stock
and love
riding it. The build date is Nov. 1969 Ser. # 14278. These numbers are
stamped
on a riveted tag on the steering head and stamped also on the engine
case. Is
this correct? Also how do you tell if it's a civilian from a police
model?
Thanks for all the input that you long time Guzzi owners provide for us
newer
Guzzi owners. it's very much appreciated. Ted

the difference between a civilian versus Ploice model are

dash and speedometer are different

Ambasador

Police
http://www.loopframe.com/lapdinst.jpg

the police has a large side stand that attaches to the left front crash
bar,
the crash bar is different as it has the stand mount.

the police frame will have a bracket welded to the left rear for a
siren,
although many have been cut off.

the ignition key will be in the dash for the civilian and on the left
under the
seat on a Police

the Police will have floorboards, and a 1 down 3 up shift pattern.

these are a few of the major differences
