The tops caps of the 74 have a recess the dampers fit into. Maybe the damper on one side isn't seated properly and / or the bottom of the damper has a locking washer to hold the damper when bolting from the bottom.

Greg,
I feel the top bolts are tight. Felt them bottom out. I did these first,
then the pinch bolts. I wanted to be sure the tubes were all the way up
before tightening the pinch bolts.
I guess I'll take the legs off again tonight and have another look-see
at everything. Very frustrating but I'll find it eventually.

Hi Ray,

The first thing that comes to mind is that - perhaps - one of the large
bolts that goes into the top of the fork tube isn't completely tight.
For me, I take turns tightening that bolt and the pinch bolt a couple of

times...usually isn't a big deal though.

If this isn't it, then I would suspect something in the assembly
process, although I can't say what that would be. But, they do need to
line up at the bottom.

Another problem. Tried to put the front wheel on the Eldo and axle
wouldn;t go thru. Discovered that the right fork leg is hanging down
about 1/2 inch lower. Now, I could just compress and bang the axle in
but what's causing that extra length and what would it do to my ride?
I've taken them both apart twice looking for answers. Both legs were
rebuilt by me with new seals, Wirth springs. Same fluid in each. PVC
spacers in each. Ideas??
And I thought this assembly part was going to be easier than the
rebuilds.!

Rear drive problem apparently solved. JB Welded the hole which was
likely a casting error. Plus Patrick reminded me about gaskets in
between each metal surface for flange shims. I forgot the top one.
Thanks
