Hi, Rob. The starter on my Vert begain doing that and
deteriorated pretty severely within two or three
months. I took to carrying a heavy wire with me and
arcing across the solenoid terminals, as someone else
has suggested, but it's hard to goose the throttle
while doing that.
I took the solenoid apart and cleaned it up but messed
things up soldering it back together. I ended up
buying a new one from MG Cycle. It's getting to be
that whenever I have a problem I feel like just buying
new from MG - those guys are great.

Another good solution is just take the whole starter into a shop
that rebuilds starters/electric motors. One in Tulsa here redid
my whole starter motor, replaced the solenoid, repainted it to
look like new and everything for $80 a few months later my
starter died and a funny smell came out of it, I took it back
and they fixed it for free (though I don't know it was their fault)
