Rob,
carry a large screwdriver with you and if you can't get it to spin, stick
the screwdriver so that it contacts the two large terminals on the solenoid
and that should make it spin. Like Pat says, lots of sparks! but it'll get
you going.
Using a wire, unless it's welding cable, is a good way to get burned or
start a fire. That solenoid carries a lot of current!
