Hi Dorien,

Sounds like a shimming is in order. But, I certainly wouldn't worry
about it until you have the bike apart for other reasons (like the
clutch - eventually). Until then, just clonk away and love life :>

Okay, Dorien, it sounds like the clutch is operating smoothly. That's
good. Could you describe what you mean by "clonky in sound and not
always smooth" a little more? The loops are always a little as you
describe, especially after they warm up - oil thins a bit, case expands
a bit, a little more free play here and there - but too much can be an
indicator that something else is going on.

Also, since you have a 67 V7, it *probably* has straight cut gears in
the four speed transmission (there were at least three combinations of
straight vs helically cut gears in the four speed boxes). I think the
straight cut gears will make more noise. Plus, if it has never been
shimmed, that will certainly add to the clunking during shifts.

You've probably noticed that sometimes you'll need to hold the gear
pedal down until the gears engage. This is "normal" and is an artifact
of the ears on the sliding muffs not engaging with the fixed ears on the

gears of the output shaft. Nothing wrong about it and nothing to do to
fix it. Just a characteristic. Just keep the pedal pushed down until
things rotate around and the ears fall into place. You'll probably
notice this more at slower speeds in lower gears than at faster speeds
in higher gears.

Hi Greg,
Ok the clonk I refer to is the noise, when after a few miles I can hear
a clonk or noise as I shift. No gears clashing or nasty stuff. A sort of

thump sound. I would think that your shimming idea may be the way to
go.Holding the pedal down syndrome is not unusual
and can happen at any time.
The clutch is showing signs of wear even though it works well and does
not slip. I have to let the lever out 3/4 travel before I take off. Lots

of free play. So one of these days, in top gear probably accelerating up

a hill as I pass some mundane machinery the revs will rise and that will

be the first sign. Hope it happens that way so I can make it home
easily. Then I will have a good reason to take the box out and apart and

ask for help.
Cheers
Dorien

Hi Dorien,

To me, this sounds more like a clutch problem than a transmission
problem - perhaps your clutch input hub is notched? For whatever reason,

it seems like that problem shows up much more pronounced when things get

heated up. Do you know the condition/history of the input hub?

Hi Greg,
Thanks for the idea. No I have not taken the engine / treansmission out,

so I don't know it's condition. The clutch seems to release well even
when hot so that part is OK.

Hi Guys,
On my 1967 V7 in the first 1/2 hour of riding the shifting is quiet,
smooth and nice. With time it gets clonky in sound and not always
smooth. I have 90w oil in the box. Is the case expanding with heat
causing the problem? My 61 Falcone uses engine oil in it's box. Nicest
shifting bike I have ever had and after 200 miles of hard driving no
changes. Any thoughts?
