Okay, Dorien, it sounds like the clutch is operating smoothly. That's good. Could you describe what you mean by "clonky in sound and not always smooth" a little more? The loops are always a little as you describe, especially after they warm up - oil thins a bit, case expands a bit, a little more free play here and there - but too much can be an indicator that something else is going on. Also, since you have a 67 V7, it *probably* has straight cut gears in the four speed transmission (there were at least three combinations of straight vs helically cut gears in the four speed boxes). I think the straight cut gears will make more noise. Plus, if it has never been shimmed, that will certainly add to the clunking during shifts. You've probably noticed that sometimes you'll need to hold the gear pedal down until the gears engage. This is "normal" and is an artifact of the ears on the sliding muffs not engaging with the fixed ears on the gears of the output shaft. Nothing wrong about it and nothing to do to fix it. Just a characteristic. Just keep the pedal pushed down until things rotate around and the ears fall into place. You'll probably notice this more at slower speeds in lower gears than at faster speeds in higher gears. |
Hi Greg,
Ok the clonk I refer to is the noise, when after a few miles I can hear
a clonk or noise as I shift. No gears clashing or nasty stuff. A sort of
thump sound. I would think that your shimming idea may be the way to
go.Holding the pedal down syndrome is not unusual
and can happen at any time.
The clutch is showing signs of wear even though it works well and does
not slip. I have to let the lever out 3/4 travel before I take off. Lots
of free play. So one of these days, in top gear probably accelerating up
a hill as I pass some mundane machinery the revs will rise and that will
be the first sign. Hope it happens that way so I can make it home
easily. Then I will have a good reason to take the box out and apart and
ask for help.
Cheers
Dorien
