I'm just curious, does it really matter if it is on the compression
stroke? Doesn't the cam push the same distance regardless of the stroke
its on?

Find TDC by looking into the plug hole for the piston head at its highest point on the compression stroke. Also, get the valve clearances for your Ambo. Eldo is 6 for intake, 8 exhaust.
