About the springs in the distributor...one of them is supposed to be tight (under tension) as the distrubtor rests, the other has an elongated loop on the end that is supposed to be loose. this helps set the static and at-idle timing. It's possible they could be weak. It's cheap insurance to replace them. |
Matt: There are some sets as you describe. Probably originals. These
create a spark advance curve which really isn't a curve, but two linear
increments with a slope angle change between them.
There are other sets with two taut coil springs. The two springs have
different diameter wires and have differing numbers of coils. One
spring works more at lower rpm the other works more at higher rpm. It
balances out for a more linear advance curve without the crook in it.
Both sets will work. Also both will fatique with age and lead to
excessinve advance and pinging. Regardless of which you have or which
you get as replacements, good idea to toss them after five years or so.
