The "reason" for the spring is to keep the lever pushed aft and keep
constant minor tension on the cable so that the cable doesn't bounce and
disconnect itself from the transmission lever while riding. I believe
that, with a bad adjustment, it is possible to draw the lever in solid
against the transmission rear cover and still have some compression
space remaining in the spring.
