Dane,
No help here, just checking in with comments/moral support

While rebuilding my SS1s the last few days I noticed that the needle was
in the lowest position, I moved it to the third notch per the manual,
may have to move it back down to lean out the mid-range per Johns
experience(?) The rebuild kits I ordered were pretty light, 5 paper
gaskets and 1 banjo filter per carb. I was hoping for a float
needle/seat asembly. Just for fun I priced float needles... $41 EACH.
My first thought was that $82 would go a long way toward a set of VHBs
on ebay. I'm glad to see that John C. is working toward some solution.
John, did you consider using a filler material (solder?) prior to
reshaping the float needle? is that a dumb idea?
My hope is to leave the mid range dia. as is and take materail off the
top end portion then adjust the needle or atomizer orifice position.

Dane, I recall seeing the float weight in the manual, if you need me to
I can look it back up. I'm with you on wanting to get the bike on the
road, not sure how much patience I'll have for the SS1s. I can say that
if my pants catch fire I'll probably switch sooner.
I truely don't believe that the floats are the issue. If the float was
too heavy the bike would flood and pour gas all over the place.

I'm also not sure how to properly use the air valve, my guess is to
close it down for starting, but does it need to be fully opened in
normal operation? If so I may have a cable length issue.
The air valve is a complete mystery to me. I've run the bike with it
in both positions with not noticeable differences.
The accelerator pumps are the ticket when is comes to starting the
bike. A few twists of the throttle and she'll fire right up. I never
tickle the floats.
John C.
