Hi Dane:

I've been running SS1's on my 67 for two seasons. I was getting a wopping
26 mpg on them. People riding behind me commented on the bike smelling
rich.

Last year I bought some hex brass stock and made a new set of atomizers.
This is the part that the main jet needle runs in. It sticks up into the
carb throat. By tightening up the hole through which the needle passes by
0.0005 inches, half a thou, my mileage went up the 34 mpg - still not great.
I tried a smaller hole and the bike wouldn't run.

I'm convinced that the needle profile on these things is wrong. They are
way too rich in the midrange but correct on the top end.

My plan this season is to see if I can reshape the needles. What I want to
do is find it's actual position in the atomizer at several throttle
positions. Then I plan to tapper the needed more on the top end so I can
drop it down, less mid range gas, without leaning out the top end. I may
also play with the atomizer geometry.

On the idle side: My bike will idle all day on the center stand. Put it on
the side stand and it stalls. I think the left carb gets starved for gas
because of the lean angle.

I've gotten in the habit of modifying all my loop side stands. I always
lengthen them by an inch to reduce the severity of the lean angle. This
helped the V700 idle some, but it's still not perfect.

To prevent gas from leaking by the float needle I repointed the needles by
chucking them in a drill press and smoothed out the tapered surface with a
fine wet stone. I then fount a small o ring in my metric o ring kit, JC
Whitney, and pressed it into the bore that the foat needle seats in. Now
the needles seats against a rubber o ring intead of against the metal float
chamber top.

Keep in touch and I'll let you know how I make out.

Can anyone give advice on how to make these carbs work correctly? They run
super rich and won't hardly even let the bike idle..
