I just looked in the catalog . Those metric screw and tool co have taps
22mm X 1.5 22mm x 2.5, 22mm X 1.0 and 22mm x 2.0
They have helicoil kits also.

McMaster-Carr doesn't carry a 22x1.25, that's a bad sign. The crank or
plug are usually peened to keep the plug in place. I've had to do what
Guzziology suggests - use another smaller tap with the correct pitch
(such as 8x1.25) as a scraper to clean the threads. Slow tedious work to
be sure and hard on the fingers without some sort of handle to hold the
tap. Found a little wooden handle in all of my fathers old tools that
clamped to it securely and had at it. Cheers,
