Hi Tom,
The neutral light receives power directly from the fuse box. The neutral
switch operates as a ground - but only when the nub on the shift drum
contacts the metal tab of the neutral switch. So, unless your neutral
switch is bent way too high and coming in contact with the drum at all
times, you've got a ground coming from somewhere else along the way. The
good news is that the neutral switch is so simple that I doubt the fault
lies within it.
As you've probably already surmised, the generator light works in the
same way...the ground is provided by the - in your case - alternator.
I'd check the wiring from point A to point B there, too.
I don't think there is anything common between your two problems except
that they both appear to be ground issues.

Guys - looking for inspiration (ideas) - hopefully this will be obvious to someone. Symptoms: 1974 Eldo Police (disk) 1. Neutral light stays on at all times switch is on - regardless of gear (even neutral). 2 wires on the switch. Ground fault? 2. Generator light. Put on the Nolan/Field alternator - triple checked wiring. Battery is charging, bike runs great, no generator light, ever. I pulled light from under dash and checked - yep - 12v on the red wire with switch on. However - if I ground the light socket at the red wire connector with switch on - magic, it lights. Ground fault? All other dash lights, handlebar controls, signals, brake lights, work as normal. Something common here? I can't see anything obvious, bike runs fine, no spitzen & sparken. Thanks -tom |
