Mark,

Disconnect the cable from the speedo and check to see if it is still
square. Also disconnect it from the tranny and see if it is square. If
it has rounded out, that can cause the speedo to jump around as it only
is grabbing part of the time and is spinning free part of the time. I
would check that 1st, then do what Greg Bender said - replace the cable,
it's the cheaper fix than taking out your speedo and sending it to a
speedo shop. Palo Alto speedo and North Hollywood speedo charge in the
area of $150 for a full mechanical check out and cal.

howdy folks,

reasonably new looper here. i introduced myself a few months ago...
i've
got a few issues i'll be tackling on the ambo over the next few
weeks/months, but i'll start off with the (hopefully) easy one first.

how can one tell if the speedometer itself has gone bad, or if it's just
the
cable? the symptoms, as best i can describe them, are that the needle
appears to have some input relative to speed, but is only proportional
up to
about 40mph, and at all times fluctuates wildly (by about 40-60% of the
guage)

now, if it is the cable, i've purchased a new cable and housing, etc.
are
there any little things i need to be careful of when i replace it? i
seem
to remember hearing there were some small parts that could get lost in
bad
places if one is not vigilant...

thanks for any help, off list or on.
