DO the alternator conversion. It is easy and solves inherent charging problems with the stock Bosch setup. If you don't like that I have a spare generator. If you are truly in the wilderness the alt. conversion is the best solution. The conversion is of top notch quality. Contact Greg Field.

hope everyone had a good christmas. mine went well except for the "little problem" I had with my generator (see posting "bosch gen. parts"). I was hoping to get the engine in and started up over Christmas weekend. I got it in, but after I broke the pulley on the front of the gen. Friday, it put a crimp in my plans and increased my beer consumption over the holiday drastically. Spent a lot of hours on the internet looking up info on Bosch generators that could have gone into much more satisfying wrenching. I'm hoping someone out there will take pity on me and answer a few questions as I try to sort this out.
1) Does anyone have a Bosch Generator they want to sell, or know where to buy one? Working or not. (Bosch generator # 0 101 302 091) I broke the cast front pulley by knocking the Gen off the workbench onto the concrete floor. Even just the pulley would be nice (pulley is MG part # 1270 0125, Bosch part # 1106602026).
2) I never took a Gen apart before and I'm having a problem figuring out how to remove the nut that holds the pulley on. How do you keep the shaft from turning when you apply torque to the nut? Is it possible this nut could be reverse thread before I spend a lot of time unwittingly tightening it?
3) I have a Marelli Gen on my ambassador and also a spare one that PO said was "good as far as I know". How much of a pain/expense would it be to switch over to the Marelli? Any comments on whether or not that's a good idea?
4) What about alternator conversions? Anyone have any experience with these and pro's and con's of doing them?

I'm sure you all know the feeling, after a couple of months of work and prep the thing's about to go together and the bonehead mechanic just broke a vital and seemingly irreplaceable part. Oh well at least the store isn't about to run out of beer.
off to work now.
