Hi all,
Well, after my ride thru the snow last weekend, I decided it was time to
change the front tire on the G5. It had funny wear patters that I didn't
like. I had a brand new tire on a Ambo wheel(loop content)that I could
use, and save myself about $80.00, right?
So, I grab the wheel out of storage, throw it up on a garbage can, which
is the exact size for the wheel to fit on, and grab the tire irons. I
bust off that tire in about as much time as it takes to give a cat a
bath. Didn't even pinch the tube!!
Next, I jack up the G5 and pull the axle, and try to roll the wheel out.
Won't come, hmmm. Looks like its hitting a bleed nipple on the right
caliper. Remove two bolts, move caliper, pull wheel out. Easy.
So then I throw this wheel onto the trash can. Doesn't ride well, hmmmm.
It is a Lester mag wheel, and for some reason doesn't wanna play. Oh
well. I let the air out of the tube and begin. No I don't. Seems the
tire is stuck to the wheel. Hmmm. The other one was too, but not like
this! After a few minutes of pushing and pulling and swearing, I got me
a big 'ol C-clamp and put the torque to it. Crunch,pop! It broke loose!
Good. Lots of soapy water and flying tire irons, that tire is halfway
off. Now, I just gotta push the valve stem through the wheel. Hmmm,
won't budge. What's this here white goo-puckey around the valve stem? I
guess the guys at the tire shop who put this tire on, used some sort of
sealant around the stem. Nothing a screwdriver and a hammer won't fix!.
I insert a phillips head screw driver thru one of the disks and into the
valve stem and gently tap with the hammer. Nothing, hmmm. O.k., try
hitting it harder. Tap, tap tap. Gee, that brass valve stem is soft.
Looks like I ruint it! (Ruint IS a word out here)O.k, where the flame
wrench? After looking for the flame wrench for a few minutes and
actually finding it!, I applied some flame to the goo-puckey and smilled
as it it quickly went away. I pushed the stem right out of the wheel
with only a few more gentle taps with the screwdriver and hammer. I
pulled out the tube, and even though I had not pinched it during the
removal process, it was none the less, ruint. Afew minutes later, and
the old BENT* tire is off. *(Bald Eagle No Tread)
O.k, I'm all set to put on the new tire onto the mag wheel, after a
beer, of course. I fill the tube from the first tire up, to make SURE
that there are no leaks. Hey-Hey!! stays full! I grab the new tire and
plase it on the wheel, making sure of tire rotation. You all know how
important this step is. So I'm all happy and get to slinging iron. In no
time, the first half of the tire is on. Now to slip the tube in. All
goes well until I try and put the valve stem thru the stem hole in the
wheel. Hey, why doesn't it go in?? Hmmmm. I pull the tube out and grab
the valve stem. I inset it into the valvestem hole from the other side
of the tire. Fits, hmmm. O.k., insert tube again. Stick my big fat hands
into the tiny small space between thire and whell and manage finally to
ge the stem thru the whole. Time for another beer.
After another delicious beer, I finally finish fitting the tire to the
wheel. I fill the tire with air about half way a couple times to make
sure the tube is not pinched. Satisfied, I fill it all the way up and
bring it over to the bike. I slide it into place and try to install the
axle. Not fitting, hmmm. Tire rotation is in the right direction, spacer
is on the correct side, I think. Consult owners manual and beer.
Yup,it's right. Continue on with much difficulty. Hmmm, something just
ain't right. I pull the wheel out and think about things. Maybe, I'm
putting the wheel in the wrong way. I spin it around, now with the tire
trotation the wrong way, and the wheel mounts up just fine! Chit!
O.k., wheel comes out again and goes onto trash can(NOT into). Pull out
the tire irons, get to work. About an hour later, and two more beers,
the wheel is back on the bike and looking good! Time for a beer!
