Greg,
You mention heavy oil in the forks.....as I am in the midst of a fork seal replacement job, what type/grade of oil do you recommend, and how much of it?
I just dis-assembled my forks today, and a gelatinous substance was covering the springs...sort of resembled the goo that covered the creature in the movie "Alien"....might have been either grease or some strange mutation of thirty two year old fork oil. Anyway, my other question is, should the springs have a coating of grease on them before re-assembly? Is that what the strange substance once was????
Thanks,
Bill

For all practical purposes, they're just a set of springs holding the sliders from bottoming on the tubes, kinda like old shocks that have lost most of their oil. Heavy oil in the forks adds some drag that mimics damping, and the forcing cone at the bottom also is a crude form of damping. That's the best you can do on these forks without adding some form of damping rods. I'm working on a way to fit FAC sealed dampers inside. I'll have to make some tooling and use it to modify each slider. I want to do this on my V7 and A-series Ambo, but if others are interested, it might prompt me to devote more time to the effort. I shipped a bunch of alternator kits yesterday. Some of you will see them soon. GF On Thursday, March 3, 2005, at 10:19 AM, Greg Bender wrote:
