if you're gonna use a strap wrench, put it as close as possible to the fork lower, as you will crush/deform the upper part quite easily...

Matt,
Yeah, I am trying to remove the chrome part of the fork. I was thinking of a strap wrench myself but I have low expectations that it will come off. There is a lot of rust in there from moisture sitting. I sprayed some WD40 in there and let it sit over night..

Gunnar, Are you talking about removing the chromed seal holders that screw into the fork leg/slider? It is possible to do it with a strap wrench, but if they are stuck it would be easier to use the right tool.

Did anyone ever attempt to take the front forks apart without using the Fork collar tool?
