Hi Greg,

My bike (serial #55275) is a "California" model and is a police bike with
chrome fenders. When I got it it did not have "California" stickers on the
side covers just as you said. I believe they were original but don't know
for sure.
Also I am aware of this particular dealer from my British bike circles and
personal experience. As was stated he has a long and checkered past in his
dealings and bears watching closely. The reasons are long and varied.

Civilian versions of the police models were sold in Europe as
"California" models. They were also sold in the US. Depending on the
year, they were called "LAPD" or "California Police" in the Guzzi
catalogs. Those with chrome fenders were, I think, all "California
Police." Some had the "California" stickers on the side covers, but
most in the US did not, I think. I'm sure Mark can add to this from all
the bikes he's observed.

I used to think that all the chrome fendered bikes were civilian, too.
Over the years, I've seen dozens of them, all lacking siren brackets.
This year, I worked on two 4LS (one a late 1973 model, the other a 1974
model) bikes with chrome fenders, and BOTH had siren brackets. Weird,
but there they were. One was supposedly used by police in the Salt Lake
City area. The other owner had no history on the bike. It's possible
they were not originally equipped with those fenders, but the scabby
condition of the fenders matched the general condition of the bikes.
